Yufuin is located in the middle of Oita prefecture on the island of Kyushu. Surrounded by mountains reaching 1000m in height. The town sits in a basin where in terms of natural hot spring water capacity, it ranks second after the nearby town of Beppu. Northeast of Yufuin rises Mt. Yufudake, a majestic 1,584m symbol of the area, divided into two along its east and west ridge. When seen from the southeast the mountain looks flat, similar to Mt. Fuji, hence the moniker given to it by the locals, Bungo Fuji. The mountain is only a 10min drive from the town and for those fit enough, it's a 2hr walk to the top.
Yufuin first appears in Japan's 8th century anthology of poems, the Manyoushuu, where Mt. Yufudake appears in 4 verses. A small rustic town it maybe, however it has a history and mystery all of its own. Summer nights are cool as average temperatures are 3 to 5 degrees lower than Oita and Beppu city. In early summer beautiful fireflies light up the night. Winter sees plenty of snow and Mt. Yufudake is particularly splendid when dressed in white.
While bathing in the large hotspring look out at Mt. Yufudake and let time ebb and flow with the changing seasons. Try either of the two fountain heads each with their own unique characteristics. The outdoor hydrogen carbonate onsen, in particular, will really make a notable difference to your skin. From the restaurant on the ground floor as well as from some rooms (mountain view rooms), Mt. Yufudake can be seen. The spell-binding view of Yufuin and the mountain will enhance your dining experience.
Japanese style rooms (30m2, with bidet) and hybrid Western/Japanese rooms (30m2, with twin bed, bath and bidet) are available; both types offer a view of Mt. Yufudake or the garden.
Meals are Japanese banquet style with 12 to 13 different dishes being served. Each month the menu changes-naturally for those guests staying consecutive nights the menu changes. Regardless of the season, though, you won't leave without having tasted our local tofu and Bungo beef dishes. Through our onsen and wholesome cuisine we hope to keep you looking good on the inside and out.
We look forward to you seeing you soon.
